Mount Vernon Highway, a nearly four-mile stretch of road that starts near George Washington’s Mount Vernon and ends at Richmond Highway, will get paved next year instead of as originally planned in 2022, according to a spokesperson from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).

The reason for the delay, said VDOT, is because the project is going to be funded by the agency’s State of Good Repair Program, and those funds won’t become available until 2023. The program provides funding for deteriorated pavements and structurally deficient bridges owned or maintained by VDOT and/or localities.

Since Mount Vernon Highway paving won’t happen until next year, the striping modifications proposed by Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) at a public meeting this past spring won't take place until then as well. Those modifications include dedicated right and left turn lanes from Mount Vernon Highway into the driveway at Mount Vernon High School and a striped median at the crosswalk at Battersea Lane.

VDOT also has rescheduled the paving of Lorton Road between Richmond Highway and Silverbrook Road to 2023 based on a request from Fairfax County officials to allow additional time for the county’s Lorton Visioning Study, said the VDOT spokesperson.

VDOT is nearly finished with paving work along Mount Vernon Memorial Highway between Old Mount Vernon Road and George Washington Memorial Highway. Meanwhile, paving activities may begin as soon as this week, weather permitting, on North Kings Highway between Richmond Highway and Kathryn Street, said VDOT. The paving and restriping of Lockheed Boulevard is still scheduled for this year.
