New pickleball/tennis courts in Mount Vernon ready for play

Fairfax County Park Authority decided on George Washington Park’s new court configuration based on public feedback.

Fairfax County Park Authority’s (FCPA) conversion of George Washington Park’s aging tennis courts into six dedicated pickleball courts and two dual-use courts for tennis and pickleball is substantially complete, according to Adam Wynn, a project manager and senior planner with FCPA.

While a few minor improvements will be taking place in coming weeks, the general public is welcome to use the courts, said Wynn. The courts are not currently lighted for nighttime play, but FCPA has installed conduits that could enable that functionality, pending additional funding.

As far as parking is concerned, Wynn said that people arriving by car can park at the Mount Vernon High School stadium parking lot across the street or along Old Mount Vernon Road. During non-school hours, parking is also permitted at Riverside Elementary School, which is adjacent to the courts.

A grand opening ceremony for the courts is being planned and will be announced on the project website.

The George Washington Park courts are located at 8426 Old Mount Vernon Road.
