The Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton was asked by Fairfax County to facilitate the proposal, creation and installation of commissioned artwork at the South County Police Station and Animal Shelter, which is scheduled to open on Lorton Road next spring.
According to the calls for entry, the Workhouse is looking for artists — preferably who live in Fairfax County — to submit proposals for three distinct pieces of art: a sculpture to be placed at the entrance of South County Police Station; two-dimensional photographs or visual art to be permanently displayed in the entrance and public halls of the police station; and a three-dimensional installation to be permanently suspended from the ceiling, tying together the co-located police station and animal shelter.
Artists are expected to take into consideration the history of Lorton and South County when developing their proposals. The artwork is supposed to be welcoming and bear in mind that the facility also provides a space for community use, according to the proposal guidelines.
The timeline for all three calls for entry is the same. Proposals are due Sept. 1, and award notifications will take place Sept. 30. Delivery and installation of the work will take place in April 2023, when the facility is tentatively expected to open.
