New gymnasium opens at Lorton Community Center

All residents of Fairfax County are eligible to participate in activities at the Lorton Community Center upon applying for a free NCS general membership.

The brand-new gymnasium at the Lorton Community Center opened to the public a few weeks ago, according to staff members at the facility.

During the month of January, the gym will be used for Fairfax County’s School Age Child Care before- and after-school programs, a teen after-school program, senior men’s basketball, adult volleyball, adult basketball and pickleball. Open gym usage for anyone 16 years and older will take place on Tuesday evenings, and for teens between the ages of 12 and 18 on Friday and Saturday evenings. A full calendar is posted on the community center’s website.

The new Lorton Community Center and Library were unveiled to the public at a highly attended ribbon-cutting ceremony in mid-October officiated by Mount Vernon District Supervisor Dan Storck. The facility’s gymnasium remained closed to the public at that time since its flooring was installed incorrectly. Now that new flooring is in place, the gym will accommodate a variety of activities, according to Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services, including basketball, pickleball, volleyball and other youth, adult and adapted recreation programs.

New flooring was installed in the Lorton Community Center’s gymnasium in recent months.

All residents of Fairfax County are eligible to participate in activities at the gymnasium and other community center facilities upon applying for a free NCS general membership. Out-of-county memberships are available for an annual fee of $100.

The Lorton Community Center and Library, which was identified by Northern Virginia magazine earlier this year as one of the 10 development projects that would reshape Northern Virginia in 2022, is located at 9520 Richmond Highway. The center is open Mondays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. It is closed on Monday, Jan. 2 and Monday, Jan. 16 for county holidays.
