Waldorf native medals at Belle Haven Country Club qualifier to advance to U.S. Women’s Open

Bailey Davis made it to the finals of last year’s U.S. Golf Association (USGA) Girls Junior Championship and nearly became the first black woman to win a USGA championship.

Belle Haven Country Club in Alexandria was one of 26 locations around the world to serve as a qualifying site for the U.S. Women’s Open golf tournament this year. On Wednesday, May 11, the club held its qualifier, and a 19-year-old from just south of Waldorf, Maryland shot a -3 over 36 holes to advance to the championship.

Bailey Davis, a freshman at the University of Tennessee, narrowly edged out professional golfer Sarah Kemp from Australia to earn medalist honors. According to a report in the Tennessee Tribune, Davis made it to the finals of last year’s U.S. Golf Association (USGA) Girls Junior Championship and nearly became the first black woman to win a USGA championship.

Both Davis and Kemp will travel to Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club in Southern Pines, North Carolina from June 2-5 to participate in the U.S. Women’s Open, which is considered the world’s premier women’s golf championship, according to the USGA.
